EXPRESSIONS OF SOLIDARITY TO PARAGUAY FOR THE
TRAGEDY CAUSED BY THE FIRE AT THE YCUÁ BOLAÑOS
SUPERMARKET
THE DIRECTING COUNCIL,
CONSIDERING:
That on August 1st, 2004 the Republic of Paraguay suffered a tragedy that
represented a tremendous impact on children and the family as a result of the
fire at the Yucca supermarket in the city of Asuncion.
That almost 50 percent of direct victims were children and that hundreds of
children have become indirect victims as a result of the death or invalidity of
their parents or the disintegration of their families caused by the disaster.
RECOGNIZING:
The efforts made by the countries and the international community to support and
assist the people of the Republic of Paraguay;
The immediate response of the Inter-American Children’s Institute to the request
for assistance made by the National Secretariat for Children of Paraguay,
RESOLVES:
1. To express its solidarity and support to the people and the Government of the
Republic of Paraguay.
2. To thank the institutions of the international community that have supported
and keep supporting the assistance works for the affected population,
particularly children.
3. To congratulate the Office of the Inter-American Children’s Institute for its
celerity and response capability to face this disaster, as well as the actions
taken to coordinate assistance to victims.
4. To thank the OAS member states for their cooperation to the National
Secretariat for Children on this emergency situation.
5. To request the OAS General Secretariat to keep supporting the efforts made by
the Government of Paraguay aimed to the recovery and reinsertion of children
who were victims of this disaster as well as the technical and administrative
assistance provided through the Institute.
