VII. 79th Meeting of the Directing
Council
The
79th Meeting of the Directing Council of the Inter-American
Children’s Institute was held in Mexico City on 25-26 October, 2004. As
it should be followed by the Pan American Child Congress the substantial
issues on its agenda were more restricted than usual. The major issues
were:
The
sessions were attended by Delegates from 22 Member states, thus exceeding
the regulatory quorum. The resolutions adopted include the approval of the
Draft Revised Statutes and Rules of Procedure of the IIN. There was also
consensus in submitting to the OAS Secretary General a two-candidate slate
for the position of Director General formed by Alejandro Bonasso and
Eduardo Bustelo, as well as in reporting the outcome of the voting on each
candidate.
The
Delegate of Mexico, Ana Teresa Aranda Orozco, was unanimously elected by
acclamation as the President of the Directing Council for the 2004-2006
term of office. The Delegate of Chile, Delia del Gatto Reyes, was
unanimously re-elected by acclamation as the Vice President for the same
period, and the Delegate of the Dominican Republic, Ambassador Carmen
Berges de Amaro,
was designated, with a vote of applause, as President of Honor of
the IIN Directing Council. The following Member states were also
unanimously elected by acclamation as members of the Executive Committee
for 2004-2006: Peru, representing the Andean Region; Paraguay,
representing the Southern Cone; Honduras, representing Central America;
Trinidad and Tobago, representing the English-speaking Caribbean, and
Canada, representing North America. The
Basis of the 2005-2008 Strategic Plan of the Institute were approved as
presented by the Director General and a Special Meeting of the Directing
Council was convened to be held in April 2005 in Brasilia, the capital
city of Brazil. In
its capacity as the Preparatory Committee of the Nineteenth Pan American
Child Congress, the Directing Council elected its President, appointed the
members of its Working Groups, and established the deadline for submitting
draft resolutions. Finally,
the city of Tegucigalpa, Honduras was chosen as the venue of the 80th
Regular Meeting of the Directing Council to be held in October 2005. The
